Bidgerdii Wellness Hub is proud to share Aunty Molly’s Journey, a book created to help build understanding of dementia and tackle stigma in a culturally meaningful way.
Produced using a Dementia Australia Diversity Small Grant, the book tells the story of Aunty Molly, who learns that when it comes to dementia, there is no shame in speaking up, asking questions and seeking help.
While Aunty Molly is a fictional character, her story is grounded in real experience. Everything in the book is based on the stories and experiences collected from local Elders during a series of yarning sessions held by Bidgerdii.
Bidgerdii Program Manager Lauren Noller said the book is a tribute to the community that helped shape it.
“The book is dedicated to our Elders because we couldn’t have done it without them,” Lauren said.
She said the story’s message reaches far beyond one community.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re non-Indigenous, anyone could pick up this book and go: ‘This is what my mum is going through.’
“Aunty Molly doesn’t belong to anyone; she belongs to everybody.”
